The Llyn Peninsula has a wonderful selection of beaches. Below are examples of some of them...

Abersoch main beach is probably the most popular beach in the area. Its sheltered position makes it ideal for bathers and watersports lovers alike. Its easterly aspect means it faces the mountains of west Wales and St Tudwal's Islands giving spectacular views. The beach is considered to be "safe" with no severe currents or rips in normal conditions. A motor boat exclusion zone provides a secure area for bathers. Speed restrictions are enforced near to the beach marked by a series of yellow buoys.

International sailing events are held from this beach providing a wonderful spectacle. A large number of yachts are moored in the bay during the summer months. The beach is also popular with powerboat users and windsurfers. The prevailing south-westerly wind blows cross-shore here which is ideal for windsurfers. There are no waves for surfers to be found here - rough water conditions occur when the wind blows from an easterly quarter.

Beach huts can be rented by the day or week. Enquire at the beach cafes.

There is an area of this beach where dogs are not allowed between 1st April and 30th September and this runs from SCYC (yacht club) to the Golf Road slipway. The map for this area is available here.

The HARBOUR BEACH is a small area of sand straddling the River Soch - between the outer harbour and the Warren beach. It is often quiet in terms of numbers of people though it is a throughfare for tractors and so can be quite noisy! A large area of sand is exposed at low tide.

Part of this beach has a dog exclusiin zone from April 1st to 30th September. The map for this area is available here.

This beach is popular with families and access is easy. There are plenty of facilities close at hand in the village. The beach is south facing, so can also be a good spot for surfers. The water quality here is excellent.

Beautiful beach and often quiet - though becoming busier during the school holidays. Popular with surfers when there are waves. Access through Nant y Big farm - where there is a car park. Steep flight of steps cut into the cliffside provides access to the beach. Potentially dangerous rip tides can occur on this beach.

Dogs are allowed all year round.

PORTH COLMON beach or Penllech beach to give it its proper title can be reached from the rocky harbour at Porth Colmon or from a footpath from the car park situated about half way along the beach.
Normally very quiet. No facilities.

A popular beach, backed by steep grassy cliffs. The beach is known as "Whistling Sands" because of the sound that occurs when you shuffle your feet! This does not happen all the time, but is a unique experience when it does! The noise is created by the unique shape of the sand particles and there is only one other such beach in Europe. National Trust car park is 200yd walk to the beach. Cafe and toilets open in season.

Porth Neigwl, or Hell's Mouth as it is also known, is a long stretch of sand and stones, exposed to the full force of the Atlantic. It is extremely popular with surfers and seldom gets busy on the beach itself. Its often a good spot to get away from the busier beaches of Abersoch. There is a small parking area a half mile or so from the village of Llanengan - though this gets congested in the summer, especially when there is surf. There are no facilities, though a mobile snack bar is often in the car park in the summer. A British Surf Association surf school operates at this beach - click here for more info.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: Bathing is dangerous here, as on any beach that gets surf, with strong undertows and cross currents. There is a council warning sign at the entrance to the beach but as with all local beaches there is no lifeguard. The cliffs are also highly unstable and should be avoided. For info on these currents - click here

Dogs are allowed all year round on this beach.
