Photos From The 2020 RNLI Abersoch New Year's Day Sea Dip
121 photos from today's annual RNLI sponsored sea dip are available to view at John Wormald's website. This year's event drew a huge crowd and very large number of participants, braving the icy waters for a great cause. All the money raised helps the local lifeboat crew maintain their 24hr / 365 day rescue cover for an area that runs from near Pwllheli, all the way to Bardsey Island and out into Cardigan Bay. Without events such as these, there would probably not be a lifeboat, so well done to all involved in continuing to raise money for the RNLI... and to the volunteer crew and officials of the station who give up hundreds of hours of their time each year.

Fears For The Future Of Abersoch School
Ysgol Abersoch is in the news today, with an article and video on the BBC News website about the school panto, which will be performed today by its 7 pupils. However, the item has a serious message, as Gwynedd Council are considering closure of the school, due to its very low numbers.

To view the article and watch the item, visit:

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-50809546

There is also another media item on the school on the Daily Post website, written in September when school numbers were at 9.

Abersoch RNLI New Year's Dip - Into the Roaring Twenties!
The fancy dress theme for the 20-20 RNLI New Year’s Day Dip is ‘The Roaring Twenties’, so you can look forward to seeing our usual imaginative interpretations of the theme, either looking back to the 1920s or forward to the 2020s, dashing across the Abersoch main beach at 12 noon on New Year’s Day.
We hope that everybody will make an heroic effort to raise as much money as possible, as all money raised will go directly to the RNLI to help ensure that our local crew can be equipped with the best equipment, clothing and training when they go out to sea in any weather.
It is expected that if you join the Dip you will raise some money for the crew, who will be on and in the water at the event to look after everybody’s safety, so to take part a sponsorship form is needed. Sponsorship forms are available in the village at Abersoch Boatyard and Abersoch Watersports shop or can be downloaded by clicking here, and will be available at the tent on the beach on the day.
If you intend to join in the fun, or to watch and support, it is essential that you allow sufficient time to get through the traffic to get onto the beach before 12 o’clock. Each year we have seen disappointed people who didn’t manage to arrive in time for the Dip; we cannot delay the event as it would leave people waiting in the cold.
After the Dip hot showers will be available in SCYC, where The Cove will also be open to everybody, serving a hog roast, soup and mulled wine.

For the 2019 edition of this event, John Wormald has a selection of great photos on his site at: https://john53.zenfolio.com/nyddip2019

Farrel Over The 50 Knot Speed Barrier Again!
Abersoch windsurfer and the head of O'Shea clothing, iSUP and watersports company, Farrel O'Shea, had another incredible run at the Luderitz speed canal in Namibia. Despite not quite matching his British Record breaking run of 51.2 knots (59 mph!) from back in 2015, he still went through the elusive 50 knot barrier by clocking 50.68 knots.

As we have reported in the past, Farrel was one of the first British sailors to break the 30 knot barrier in the 1980's, however, at that time he was best known as one of Britain's most radical wave sailors. Farrel started out as a teenager in the late 1970's, by windusurfing on his local lake (see photo opposite), and you can read more about his windurfing career at... https://osheasup.com/about-us/

Daily Post Article On Winter In Abersoch...
There's a new article about Abersoch on the Daily Post North Wales Live website. Despite the rather questionable headline, there are some interesting comments from the various business owners quoted in the article - so it is worth a read.

To put things into perspective, the 1980'as and first half of the 1990's were incredibly quiet in the village, with very few businesses open from October to Easter - so in relative terms, Abersoch has become much, much busier in winter in recent years. Of the relatively new businesses to open since 1995, West coast Surf was one of the first of the seasonal type businesses to open 12 months of the year.

The Warren Hopes To Open All Year
The Haulfryn owned holiday park at the Warren, Abersoch, is applying to open all year round. Currently, property owners on the site have to vacate for 6 weeks in winter, so that the council tax does not have to be paid. It hopes the result would be an increase in employment in the area and a boost to tourism. It is unclear what the implications for council tax will be, which is currently a highly controversial topic in the area, due to many second home owners switching from council tax to business rates, thus paying alot less. Those switching to business rates suggest the fact that Gwynedd Council have increased second home council tax by 50%, played a large part in their decision.

SCYC Looking For An Office Manager

Due to the fact that our Office Manager, Jude, is retiring next year after many years at the Club, which means that the South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club (SCYC) is looking to fill that position with a suitable candidate.

The position requires a self-motivated and organized person who is confident in dealing with people, is customer focused, has the ability to self-manage and to use their initiative in day to day situations.  Experience of office administrative duties, basic knowledge of accounting and computer literacy is essential, including knowledge of Excel as well as familiarity with social media.

The ideal person for this role is someone who is able to be flexible in their working hours, with a willingness to adapt and respond to a busy working club and its members.  Working in a spectacular location with a variety of responsibilities, it’s obviously pretty full-on during the peak season, but for the rest of the year offers a high degree of flexibility and a remuneration package comparable with anything else in the area.

Candidates are invited to contact the Club, in confidence, on info@scyc.co.uk.

Scorchio Weather / Litter Issues

Tuesday July 23rd saw some searing temperatures across the Llyn Peninsula, with over 30C recorded in Porthmadog, with Aberdaron seeing temperatures between 23C and 24C before a northerly sea breeze kicked in during the afternoon, allowing the cooler seas to influence the temperatures at the weather station site. The Abersoch and Pwllheli areas also reported temperatures close to 30C, which is just about as hot as it can possibly get in these locations.

The hot weather has coincided with the school holidays, which is wonderful to see, however, it has also brought some unwanted aspects. The photo opposite was posted to the Abersoch Beach Carers Facebook Group this morning, showing that a minority of people continue to be incredibly inconsiderate to their surroundings. Thanks to the dedication of the local voluntary litter pickers, who help keep the beaches clean.

News Round Up...Another Gwynedd Council Own Goal?

According to the Daily Post and other media outlets, planning officers have stated that 2 couples who want to build their own homes in Llanengan, should be refused permission as the homes would end up being worth too much!!!

Councillors have so far rejected the planning officers recommendations though, according to the article in the Post, "Cllr Stephen Churchman described it as one of the “hardest decisions” he’d ever been faced with but said “with a heavy heart” he would have to refuse."

The story can be read in more details on the Daily Post website and also on the Cambrian News website.

In other news, Bear Grylls' potential slipway on the island is being tweaked, so will need further approval from planners - more info here and a beach hut on the main beach in Abersoch has sold for £110,000 - see here.

Kevin Bell has completed his paddleboard and walk from Abersoch to Poynton in Cheshire, raising thousands of pounds in charity for Cancer Research. He hopes to complete the sections on the peninsula which were missed out due to sea conditions, later in the summer.

Owi Needs Help

Many will know Owi or his dad, who used to launch boats at Vic and Gill's yard - and the horrible news is that Owi has had a serious accident in Bali... this is the text from the GoFundMe page for him...

"As some of you may already know our dear freind Owi has been involved in an accident whilst spending his last few days in Bali...
He is currently unconscious in intensive care. Nobody knows exactly what had happened but all we do know is Owi and his parents really need our help.
Caroline and Vic (his mother and father) are currently on their way out to Bali to be by his side. Words can not describe what they must be going through.
If we can all pull together and help in any way, it'll go really far. The expenses of both Owis hospital stay and treatment, Carolines and Vics flights and time out - they are going to be through the roof and I know they would appreciate any form of help from all of his friends and family.
Owi is a fighter, let's aid his recovery and his parents sanity.
Thank you for reading and huge thanks of behalf of his parents for donating, whether it's a small amount or large amount.

Our thoughts are with you Owi."

Busy Day For Coastguard Teams & Local Lifeboat Crews

Local coastguards, the coastguard SAR helicopter and the Abersoch Lifeboat were called out early this morning to join the search for a missing teenage girl, who was located in the water off Abersoch and taken to hospital by ambulance.

During the morning, the coastguard rescue team (CRT) were called out again, this time to assist the Porth Dinllaen team with the recovery of dogs and their owners who had gone over cliffs, with no safe access. Porthdinllaen RNLI recovered a person stranded at the bottom the cliffs and the dogs, however, unfortunately and very sadly for all involved, one of the dogs had died from the fall.

Remember, if you are caught up in any coastal emergency, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard, who then alert the local CRT and the local RNLI Lifeboat.

Charity Paddle Board To Poynton!

Kevin Bell, who lives in Llanengan is embarking on Saturday on a 200 mile paddle board from Abersoch to Poynton in Cheshire in aid of Cancer Research.

He'll be setting off on this arduous adventure on Saturday morning, leaving the Golf Slipway at 9.45am, where anybody can join him on the first leg just along the beach to Mickey's.

The rest of day one will then see him attempting a difficult section round Bwlchtocyn, across Porth Ceiriad, around Cilan Headland and into Hell's Mouth.

Thereafter, the journey will take him from Hell's Mouth to Aberdaron from Aberdaron, through the dangerous waters of Bardsey Sound, and into Porth Oer (Whistling Sands). Kevin will be accompanied by other paddlers and will continue up the coast and eventually across the mouth of the Dee estuary and onto the Bridgewater Canal at Runcorn.

He will be posting a full daily itinerary and updates on his social media accounts:
Insta: @kevinbellwaterman
Facebook: Kevin Bell Abersoch
Twitter: @thehometownpad1

You can donate to a very worthy cause via one of our cash collections en route or via his JustGiving page:
www.justgiving.com/fundraising/kevin-bell14

For those unfamiliar with the waters once you leave the relatively sheltered bay of Abersoch, Kevin will undoubtedly face some very challenging waters on his first days, once he heads through the sound and towards Ceiriad and Cilan and on subsequent days towards Bardsey and beyond. This looks like a really, really difficult challenge...

News Round Up...

Those who were lucky to have visited Abersoch for the Easter Weekend saw some sublime weather, with several days of consecutive warmth and sunshine, which would not have been out of place in the middle of summer. The still early morning's on the beach were a feature of this fine spell, with a glassy bay due to the lack of breeze. The main beach was as busy as a summer holiday day, as can be seen on the photo opposite, taken by John of www.totallyabersoch.co.uk. Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and the last couple of days have seen a return of the rather more changeable weather, with a Met Office named storm, "Storm Hannah", set to bring some gales to the area overnight and into Saturday. This forecast has led to the cancellation of the "Roc" endurance triathlon event, that was due to commence on Saturday morning.

Looking ahead and there is a new series of races which are set to take place on Sunday May 26th, starting from the Golf Club in Pwllheli and from the organisers of the Pen Llyn Ultras. The Pen Llyn Coastal & Trail Series consists of 3 race options, a 10K and Half and Full Marathon distances, with the Marathon taking the beautiful route along the coastal path from Abersoch and round to Porth Neigwl. These trail races are in response to the growing popularity of trail running, which is a subject we'll be returning to in the near future.

Porth Neigwl / Hell's Mouth Clean Up...

Llanengan Litter Pickers have organised a beach clean up at Porth Neigwl on Sunday 10th March from 10am to midday. This follows a successful clean up organided by Surfers Against Sewage recently. The recent storms continue to bring in large quantities of plastic waste onto our beaches, so these clean ups are becoming more and more important. All welcome to attend and help.

Llanengan Litter Pickers have a Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1948299518560778

Abersoch also has a Beach Carers group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/376906646427355

It is great to see these volunteer groups helping to keep our beaches clean.
