The 2nd Abersoch "San Silvestre" 6K Run

The second addition of this fun run will take place on New Year's Eve on the main beach, where you can run your last run of 2018. The event was inspired by the famous "San Silvestre" runs in Spain and when our favourite Spaniard comes to Abersoch for the festivities and misses his NYE eve race and ends up running it on his own, it was decided to bring a little bit of Spain to Abersoch. So, why not come and join him again for the last race of the year and help bring the San Silvestre race spirit to Abersoch.
This will be a fun event and participants are requested to meet at the yacht club end of Abersoch main beach at 12pm for a 6k run. The after race "debrief" will take place at SCYC with raffle, prize giving and drinks.
Run starts and finishes at the slipway at SCYC end of the beach.
ALL WELCOME!

New Races Coming To Pen Llyn

3 brand new races are coming to Pwllheli and Abersoch next summer, in the form of the Pen Llyn Trail & Coastal Series.

10K, half marathon and full marathon distances are being organised by the Pen Llyn Ultra team and are set to take place on Sunday 26th May, 2019.

We will have much more info on these races shortly, however, they will be mostly held on the local trails and paths, rather than on the roads - with trail running becoming an increasingly popular alternative (or complement) to simply running on tarmac.

Entries are live at:

Pwllheli Marina Sale Considered

The BBC are reporting that the marina in Pwllheli could be sold off or leased out to private investors. With refurbishment of the facilities required and also the ongoing problems of silting, it appears the council are reluctant to use the money that the marina brings in, to improve the situation. A council officer is quotes as saying that re-investing in the marina "...would mean having to cut services if that money did not go back to the authority".

Help Keep Local Toilets Open

Gwynedd Council are currently conducting an online survey regarding the provision of local toilets, The survey says... "Assessment of need for the provision of toilets... Gwynedd Council has a responsibility to assess the community's need for toilets in Gwynedd and to put a plan in place to meet identified needs.

We are interested in your views. The information you provide will help us build a picture of community's needs. We will use the information to help prepare a Local Toilet Strategy, which we will publish by 31st May 2019.

For the purpose of the survey and this strategy, the term toilet includes changing facilities for babies and changing facilities for people with disabilities. These can be located in private buildings such as cafes and shops that are a part of the community grant scheme as well as public toilets run by the council."

We urge everyone to complete the online survey asap to help keep our local public toilets open... click here for the survey.

The 2019 RNLI Abersoch Sponsored Sea Dip - The Details

Some things are clearly Black and White!
This year the fancy dress theme for the RNLI New Year’s Day Dip is ‘Black and White’, so you can look forward to seeing penguins, dalmatians and zebras, amongst others, dashing across the Abersoch main beach at 12 noon on New Year’s Day.
We hope that everybody will make an heroic effort to raise as much money as possible, as all money raised will go directly to the RNLI to help ensure that our local crew can be equipped with the best equipment, clothing and training when they go out to sea in any weather.
It is expected that if you join the Dip you will raise some money for the crew, who will be on and in the water at the event to look after everybody’s safety, so to take part a sponsorship form is needed. Sponsorship forms are available in the village at Abersoch Boatyard and Abersoch Watersports shop or can be downloaded by clicking here, and will be available at the tent on the beach on the day.
If you intend to join in the fun, or to watch and support, it is essential that you allow sufficient time to get through the traffic to get onto the beach before 12 o’clock. Each year we have seen disappointed people who didn’t manage to arrive in time for the Dip; we cannot delay the event as it would leave people waiting in the cold.
After the Dip hot showers will be available in SCYC, where The Cove will also be open to everybody, serving a hog roast, BBQ, soup, cocktails and mulled wine.

Survey & Warning After Porth Neigwl Landslide

A significant, recent landslide onto the beach at Porth Neigwl has led to a survey by Gwynedd Council engineers, according to an article in the Cambrian News. The council has reiterated its advice regading cliffs in the area... for "people to take care while near the coastline. There is an increased risk of landslip during and following periods of intense or prolonged rainfall so care should be taken at all times if walking along the top of, or directly below, a cliff."

2 Missing Persons Rescued

News from the volunteers at Abersoch Lifeboat... "Abersoch RNLI were paged at 3.01pm yesterday to an emergency call of 2 persons missing in the water following jet ski activities.
The Lifeboat launched at 3.11pm and proceeded to Carreg y trai (half tide rocks),  to start the search with other vessels in the area assisting.
Abersoch Coastguard and the Rescue helicopter were also tasked.
The two people missing were found by a passing vessel and their jet ski who had joined the search at around 3.38 and passed to the Lifeboat for first aid.
One of the casualties was extremely cold, they had been missing in the water for over 40 minutes,  the Lifeboat returned with the casualties to the station and the decision was made to land the helicopter for the onboard paramedic to assess them. After warming up at the station, they were able to return home.
Happy ending with lots of great team work with the other agencies."

Cheshire Family Thank Wales Air Ambulance For Abersoch Medivac

A family from Cheshire have thanked Wales Air Ambulance who flew to the aid of their eleven-year-old daughter whilst holidaying in North Wales.

The Slater family from Macclesfield were enjoying a family holiday on the Llŷn Peninsula when disaster struck during May half-term 2017.

Richard Slater recalls the frightening experience: “We were on holiday at the caravan in Abersoch just as my wife (Lynne) and I had done as kids. Our son Tom and Daughter Laura were on their scooters with friends enjoying themselves. Laura decided to scoot down a hill and it was at this moment when things took a turn for the worst.

“Whilst scooting down the hill, Laura crashed straight into the side of car, leaving her with serious injuries.

“Fortunately, a friend of ours who is a nurse was nearby when the accident happened, and suspected Laura had broken her femur. Upon the arrival of the Paramedics they confirmed she had indeed broken her femur and an air ambulance was called because of the distance to Bangor.”

“When the helicopter arrived the Doctor and Critical Care Practitioner worked very quickly to stabilise her condition and tend to her other injuries which included a cracked rib and lacerations to her other leg. The initial plan was to fly her to Ysbyty Gwynedd but because of how busy they were, a decision was taken to fly Laura to the Major Trauma Centre at the Royal Stoke University Hospital instead.”

Laura Slater was flown from the scene at Abersoch to the Royal Stoke Hospital in a flight which took less than fifty minutes.

Richard added: “Upon arrival at Stoke, Laura was operated on the next day and had been discharged within a few days to recover at home. It was incredible relief for us when we were told the air ambulance was en route. We realised the seriousness of her injuries so to have the helicopter fly her to the specialist care very quickly meant so much to us.

“We as a family think that Wales Air Ambulance is such an amazing service. Laura is living proof of how important they are in getting quickly to patients who need urgent medical care. We cannot thank the crew enough for what they did for our Laura.”

The Air Ambulance relies on donations to continue its lifesaving work - for more info - visit www.walesairambulance.com

Sailing Regatta Put Back A Day - Bad Forecast For Saturday...

The Abersoch regatta family events starts this evening with the crab catching at the harbour but please note that the sailing events that were scheduled to take place next Saturday, will now be on the Sunday 12th Aug - weather permitting of course. The low pressure bringing the potential gale and rain on Saturday is still causing some issues with the models in terms of predicting its behaviour, so the forecasts could chop and change a bit, however, Saturday does not look good at this stage.

Bananas In Abersoch!!!...

Local photographer Martin Turtle has been nurturing this huge banana plant for quite some time and this summer it has got two lots of mini bananas growing on it, probably helped by the warmer than average summer temperatures. The plant is a massive 16ft tall and is a hardy Japanese variety, which helped it survive the severe winter and early spring weather. The bananas on the plant are tiny and not really the edible variety that we see in the shops, however, it is fascinating to see such a plant thrive in the Abersoch climate!

Derwyn Llyn To Represent North Wales At National LABC Awards
Congratulations to DERWEN LLYN CONSTRUCTION LIMITED and partners in the company, Gwilym and Sion Jones, who have been chosen to represent North Wales in the National LABC building awards. The company has built some of the new properties that have sprung up in Abersoch in recent months, notably Pentraeth (as you approach the village from the Pwllheli direction). This property was nominated by Gwynedd Building Control, to represent the council in the prestigious LABC building awards as best individual home built in Gwynedd within the last 12 months. The awards ceremony was held last Friday evening, April 20th, at St Davids Hotel near Chester. Builders Gwilym and Sion were accompanied by their partners Emma and Catrin and much to their delight they won the award for North Wales. They now go onto Cardiff to represent North Wales for the National awards ceremony.
Those of you who travel into Abersoch on a regular basis cannot help notice this stunning property when approaching the village and it comes as no surprise that the house was nominated and won the award for its quality of build and design. The architects on the project were Dobson Owen in Pwllheli.

Llanbedrog.info are reporting that the National Trust have decided that the beach huts will be unable to be positioned on Llanbedrog beach this summer, due to the erosion caused by the easterly gales earlier this year. However, there is some good news in that the beach has now been declared safe after the removal of contaminated sand.

You can read more info on this over on the excellent Llanbedrog.info Facebook Page - by clicking here.

Serious Issue On Llanbedrog Beach..

Our friends over at Llanbedrog.info are reporting on a serious issue on Llanbedrog beach. The recent easterly storms, combined with high tides to bring some severe erosion to some local beaches and this erosion has uncovered an old refuse tip on the beach! Around 300 tons of contaminated sand has already been removed from the beach and further work is ongoing, however, precautions are urged for visitors to the beach, including no bare feet and the beach huts will not be in place for Easter. You can read the full warning over on the excellent Llanbedrog.info Facebook Page - by clicking here. The story has also been covered by the BBC here.

Another (Unexpectedly) Snowy Morning In Abersoch...

On our forecast on Wednesday morning we mentioned the possibility of some wintry precipitation overnight in Abersoch with perhaps some snow for the highest ground of Pen Llyn, however, snow ended up falling right down to sea level this morning, with a 5cm covering reported locally.

Local photographers were out and about early to capture some stunning images, 2 of which are shown opposite and John Wormald of Totally Abersoch has uploaded some photos to his Facebook group - here.

Martin Turtle of www.turtlephotography.co.uk has also been capturing some stunning images, which can be seen in his gallery in the near future.

More On The Snowfall - Early Morning Photos From Llanengan...

Areas around Abersoch are snowbound this morning after the heavy snowfall of last night and here are some photos from early this morning from the village of Llanengan where up to 10" of lying snow has been reported.

Thanks to Spout at West Coast Surf for the photos.

Although there had been the threat of snowfall and blizzards leading up to last night's snowfall event, the way it unfolded was fairly unexpected. An area of heavier snowfall moved up from the south, through Cardigan Bay and intensified and remained in place for several hours with the Abersoch area of Pen Llyn right in the firing line and under some of the heavier snowfall. The radar image below from 15.50hrs yesterday, shows the situation unfolding with the brighter colours the heavier snowfall. We mentioned on our weather page this morning that if this was an urban area in the firing line, then the Met Office would have probably issued a "flash" amber or even red weather warning, however, despite the ice storm, followed by the blizzard, the warning's were never upgraded from the "yellow" level - which was very surprsing, as road conditions were about as lethal as they could get!

After The Ice Storm - The Snow Storm Hits Abersoch...

The snow that we reported falling late yesterday afternoon intensified and settled on the frozen ground to bring blizzard-like conditions to the higher ground of the area and some localised heavy snowfall. Up to 20cm - 25cm of lying snow has been reported in the Llangian / Llanengan areas, with deeper drifts, with around 10cm in the Abersoch village areas.

Spout from West Coast Surf put his snow chains on his van last night to have a look at conditions and the dashboard cam footage from his trip can be found over on the West Coast Facebook page.

Further updates to follow...

An Ice Storm Hits Abersoch...

The bitterly cold spell of weather reached a crescendo in Abersoch today with a very unusual weather event for the area - infact it is an extreme weather event - an ice storm. With blizzards in the forecast, instead of snowfall, the village saw a combination of severe gale force winds from an easterly quarter, temperatures near to 0C and a mix of ice pellets, sleet and snow, which has coated most surfaces in a thick layer of ice. This is incredibly rare for this part of the world and has led to some very treacherous surfaces underfoot and reports of trees down in the area, due to the added weight of the ice and the strength of the winds, with cars and pedestrians really struggling. Spout at West Coast Surf has posted this image on the West Coast Facebook page of colleague Eilir, and says the photo doesn't do the layer of ice justice.

The high winds, which have gusted over 60mph in the area, have brought some very rough seas to the bay, as shown by the webcam shot from SCYC.

The weather has led to the cancellation of this weekends Porth Neigwl beach clean up.

At 4.30pm, snow was falling on top of the ice, making for quite an incredible day of weather.

Cai From Abersoch - Becomes A Welsh National Skiing Champion

Congratulations to 9 year old Cai Myers from Abersoch, who recently became the Welsh Minis Champion at the Welsh Alpine Skiing Championships that were held in the Swiss ski area of Les Crosets / Champery. 310 competitors took part in giant slalom and slalom races over 3 days of exciting racing and the under 10's age group also had to tackle the full length, adults, FIS standard giant slalom course. A flying second run in the giant slalom format, where he finished 2nd British U10 and first Welsh boy, whilst also beating most of the U12 field too, was enough to win the overall Welsh title. Cai, who was born locally and lived in Abersoch until the age of 5, attending the village primary school, is currently living in France, spending the summer school holidays back in his home village.

The Coconut Kitchen Fans Enjoy One Last Curry... Wales’ best Thai restaurant raises £1500 for charities on last night!
Wales’ best Thai restaurant, The Coconut Kitchen may have officially closed its doors on 2 January but invited locals to come for one last curry on Saturday night to say a proper farewell, all in aid of charity.

The restaurant, run by Paul Withington and Preechaya Phetparsert served over 70 meals at their last supper, smashing their target of £1000 and raised £1550 to be split between The Air Ambulance, Cylch Meithrin Llanbedrog (Llanbedrog nursery) and Ysgol Llanbedrog. (Llanbedrog School), Ysgol Abersoch (Abersoch School).

The Coconut Kitchen started life as a food van in 2006 and moved into restaurant premises the following year and was voted Best Oriental Restaurant in Wales at the FOOD AWARDS in 2015 and 2016.
"It was a fantastic night and great to have so many of our regular customers with us on our final night. After 11 years it was quite emotional for everyone but we're really pleased to go out with such a bang. All the customers were very generous with their donations and were really pleased we smashed the target and raised so much for all the local causes.

All is not lost for fans of the eatery as the team behind the restaurant have created award-winning Thai sauces, pastes and marinades so you can make your favourite restaurant dish at dish at home. The sauces are available to buy online or from BOOTHS supermarkets, Dobbies Garden Centres and about 300 independent shops nationwide.
