Rare
Bird Sighting in Abersoch -Update: (16/06/2009) And here is the bird that is causing such a stir! The photo
was captured through a telescope on Monday evening and the bird
is on the Harbour Beach. It is thought that this Royal Tern is
the same bird that was sighted in Ireland recently and its normally
found in Africa. It was spotted on Monday afternoon at Porth Ceiriad
by a local man who works for the RSPB. He then spotted it again
at the harbour and there were further sightings later on in the
evening at Black Rock Sands. The bird watchers who are currently
in Abersoch (30+) are hoping it will make a return visit here
during the day.

Rare
Bird Sighting in Abersoch: (16/06/2009) Abersoch has become the centre of attention of the bird
spotting world this morning after the sighting of a Royal Tern
in the harbour yesterday evening. The sighting is possibly unprecedented
in the UK in recent years. 2 dozen bird watchers were at the harbour
before 8am, with some travelling from as far afield as Norfolk
to get a glimpse of the bird.
More details later and we have
a photo of the bird which we hope we will be given permission
to display later.

The 10K Runners Set Off
Abersoch
10K Run - This Saturday: (04/06/2009) On Saturday 6th June 2009, the first Abersoch 10K event
will take place on a stunning course that over looks Cardigan
Bay.
Stunning coastal views, a festival atmosphere,
and mile long stretch of beach (featuring some tricky groynes)
are just a few of treats in store for runners at the inaugural
Abersoch 10k. With a prize fund at around the £1000 mark
organisers do not expect a shortfall of fast runners on the day,
but there is a real emphasis on the recreational runner too with
a more forgiving 3k race option for all ages and abilities.
Locals and visitors alike are expected to
take part in the race that will attract competitors of all levels
to the 10k, from people having a go at their first race right
up to top class runners. The 10k course starts on Abersoch beach,
taking in the mile-long stretch of beach both as the start and
finishing straight. It's a course that is recognised to provide
more interesting terrain than normal races
The event is being organised by Abersoch
based events company, Sensation Group, who also organise the Wakestock
festival & publish the Abersoch Magazine. "We feel this
is an event that we are confident will run smoothly & professionally
and will appeal to all ages and running standards. We are working
closely with The Together Trust, and this event will allow us
to raise money for this fantastic charity. All funds raised from
the Abersoch 10k and 3k Beach Race will be used to give the children,
young people and adults at the Together Trust the opportunity
to experience North West Wales and take part in outward bound
and sporting activities in the area. "
Full details of the Abersoch 10K & 3K
Beach Race can be found at www.abersoch10k.com
or by calling 01758 710011. Anyone can enter online or by requesting
an entry form. There are only 500 entries for the first year,
so it's worth applying early and there's an official party planned
for after the race so if that's more your scene then get online
at the events website and book your ticket and help support the
Together Trust and this great new event.

Yacht
"Pippa" Update: (19/03/2009) The yacht "Pippa" (Pandora) that has
been causing much concern amongst the emergency services since
it set out from Pwllheli to Stanraer last week, has caused another
lifeboat call out for Porth Dinllaen RNLI. After receiving medical
treatment following the incident on 11th March, the ill equipped
sailor was seen unsuccessfully attempting to rig his sails earlier
this week. The yacht eventually set off for Holyhead from Porth
Dinllaen on Tuesday, however, after informing Holyhead Coastguard
of his intentions via VHF radio, the yacht then ignored all further
radio calls from coastguards and resulted in another launch of
Porth Dinllaen Lifeboat and the RAF Sea King rescue helicopter.
Fortunately, the yacht was seen heading safely into Holyhead harbour.
Further emergency service disruption is likely as the yacht attempts
to head further north. www.pylifeboat.org/services.htm

Abersoch Boatyard Services Park &
Launch : (05/03/2009) Tim from Abersoch Boatyard Services has emailed
us to tell you about their extended park and launch services for
2009...
"We have spent
a lot of time over the last couple of years developing the Park
& Launch side of our business to accomodate our customers
both old and new and to allow us more flexibility in the way that
we offer the service to you.
During late 2008 we decided to start offering
a service allied to our very successful Park & Launch service
which allows you the boat owner to spread the cost of your boating
over twelve months, making boat ownership a more manageable prospect
and making sure that your boat receives the care and attention
it deserves throughout the season when it's needed.
The uptake on this new service has been superb
with more than 25% of our existing customer base recognising the
obvious advantages in this twelve month contract, freeing them
up to enjoy their time in Abersoch more fully.
Our 2009 season will be our longest yet,
running for nearly 8 months for mid March through until late October.
We still have spaces available for the 2009 season, both for Park
& Launch and Total Boat Management, so for all of you guys
who have boats in Pwllheli and do your boating in Abersoch, give
us a call and see what we can do for you.
We know we can save you an hour round trip
in the car and probably £20 worth of fuel each time you
go out!"
For more details on either Park & Launch
or Total Boat Management please give Tim a call on 01758 713900.

Beresford Adams
- Branch Of The Year: (28/02/2009) Beresford Adams in Abersoch have again celebrated another
milestone achievement by winning the much coveted 'Branch of the
Year' Award for the third consecutive year out of a total of 37
offices covering North Wales and South Cheshire. Despite the present
economic climate the office achieved a high proportion of sales
throughout 2008 and the early start of 2009 has already seen an
improvement on the previous year. The Executive Manager, Martin
Lewthwaite, stated that the market has been tough but if owners
are realistic on their asking price then there are many potential
buyers in the market who still see property as a solid long term
investment.
The holiday letting business has seen an upturn in enquiries since
the new year and the weakness of the Pound against the Euro has
certainly helped the UK market and the Abersoch Team are confident
we are in for an excellent bustling holiday season.

cold day, the annual Abersoch RNLI New Year's Day Sea Dip goes
from strength to strength! Over two thousand spectators turned
out for the third event to watch 275 brave "dippers"
rush into the freezing cold sea to raise money for the Abersoch
Lifeboat. Most were in fancy dress, varying from an enormous Welsh
Dragon to a delightful bright yellow duckling! All participants
received a commemorative medal and certificate. Check out this
link to see John Wormald's fantastic photographs of the event
; if you were present either as a dipper or a spectator, the chances
are your photograph will be there!

of the RNLI who generously supported the event, including the
many volunteers who gave time to help on the day, Harlech Foods,
Gwynedd Disposables and Willy and Jane Williams for use of the

the amount raised is expected to significantly better last year's
sum of £7500, all of which will be used to support the training
of our crew.
PS A number of participants forgot
to collect their certificates, please either send an SAE to Emma
Hancox; c/o Boardrider, Abersoch High Street or collect from the

at Boardrider, please allow a couple of weeks so we can order
more! Clive Jenkins, Abersoch Lifeboat Fundraising Committee Secretary.

Wales Air Ambulance
Fundraising Evening
Angelina's Italian Restaurant, High Street, Abersoch: (17/11/2008) On Sunday 9th November, a charity dinner and
quiz was held at Angelina's Restaurant in Abersoch, with the aim
of raising £1000 (the cost of an average mission) for Wales
Air Ambulance.
Tickets were £25, and included a glass
of fizz on arrival, dinner and quiz entry. The evening comprised
of a four-course meal with quiz rounds taking place between courses:
guests were invited to form teams of 4-6 and answered questions
on subjects such as Food and Drink, Wales and Italy.
Runners Up: "The Should've Paid
More Attention At School Kids"
After six rounds of questions, and some (apparently
very difficult) Mr Men to identify, the quiz was won by 'The Blockheads'
(Jilly and Block, Mike and Sue Daley and Mike and Lynne Maylor)
who narrowly defeated 'The Should've Paid More Attention At School
Kids' (Ben and Jules Holland, Josh and Jamie Brabbin, Ed Haywood
and Hannah Daley) after a tiebreak question.
At the end of the evening a raffle was held,
with a range of prizes donated by Angelina's suppliers and generous
locals. Angelina's regulars Steve and Jenny Harris also donated
a weeks' holiday in their Spanish villa, which was auctioned off,
selling for £701.
The evening raised a total of £1,750
for Wales Air Ambulance, significantly more than the original
target of £1000. The organisers are very grateful to everyone
involved in this event and pleased to have been able to raise
this much money for such a worthy cause.
The Winners! "The Block Heads"

Coastguards
& Lifeboat In Cliff Rescue: (24/09/2008) A man was rescued on Tuesday evening after becoming trapped
on cliffs between Porth Ceiriad and Cilan Head. The combined efforts
of the local shore based Coastguard Rescue Team and the Abersoch
RNLI Inshore Lifeboat carried out the rescue. According to the
www.rnliabersoch.co.uk
website, "The man had been trying
to go fishing with his brother but had taken the wrong route down
the cliff and got himself into a position where he could neither
go back up or get down. The Lifeboat landed a crewman at the bottom
of the cliffs as a marker for the Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team
who sent a man to the casualty by abseiling down the cliffs. He
reached the casualty and brought him down on the ropes to the
cliff base where both were picked up by the Lifeboat."

Charity Lecture:
(29/08/2008) Soroptimist International of South Caernarfonshire are
delighted that Mark Cook OBE the founder president of Hope
and Homes for Children has agreed to give a Charity Lecture on
Thursday 4th September 2008 at 7.00pm at the Canolfan, Porthmadog.
Tickets are £10.00, which includes Cheese and Wine and can
be obtained from either Jane at 01758 712794 or Louise at 01758712028. Mark Cook was a UN Commander in the former Yugoslavia in
1993 and close to retirement when he made a plea on television
for money to restore and rebuild orphanages. A a result of this,
the charity Hope and Homes for Children was started and now helps
over 2000 children in 13 countries. At the present time funds
are being raised for "Project Sierra" to help the children
in Sierra Leone which is one of the poorest countries in the world.

Lifeboat / Air
Ambulance Rescue: (23/08/2008) Abersoch Lifeboat brought an injured woman ashore on Friday
to a waiting Air Ambulance (see photo below). The Air Ambulance
pilot showed great skill in landing the helicopter on a very narrow
strip of land above the high tide mark on the Harbour Beach. For
details of the incident, visit: www.rnliabersoch.co.uk/callout_files.htm
Coastguard Strike:
(23/08/2008) Holyhead Coastguard will be starting a 48 hour strike on
Saturday evening which could have implications for the co-ordination
of the maritime rescue services over the weekend (Holyhead Coastguard
co-ordinates all rescues in our area). The RNLI Lifeboats are
a separate, voluntary service and will be operating as normal,
as will the local auxillary Coastguard teams, however the public
should be aware that there could be shortcomings in the speed
and efficiency of rescue this weekend.
Another Porth
Neigwl Incident: (21/08/2008) The emergency services were called again on Wednesday evening
(the third time in a week) when persons got into difficulty again
in gentle surf conditions at Porth Neigwl. Fortunately, 2 surf
instructors, who are trained surf lifeguards, were teaching a
group nearby at the time and pulled the people out of the sea.
A total of 5 people were rescued from the water, including 2 persons
who had initially gone into help.
Porth Neigwl
Incidents: (20/08/2008) The last week has seen 2 incidents involving the emergency
services at Porth Neigwl where people have got into difficulty
after getting caught in rip currents. One of the incidents was
a near-drowning and the person involved was airlifted to hospital.
We posted some information on "rips" some time ago -
and it can be viewed by clicking here.
If you are considering going into the water at this beach, then
a knowledge of rip currents is essential, especially as there
are no surf lifeguards at any beach in Gwynedd.
Wakestock 2009
Dates Announced: (20/08/2008) After the success of Relentless Wakestock 2008, many fans
are clamouring to find out the dates for Wakestock 2009. After
much anticipation organisers are pleased to announce that, subject
to final confirmation, Wakestock 2009 will take place on the 10th,
11th and 12th July next year. The event will remain a three-night
extravaganza, after such great feedback from this year. These
dates ensure that the event once again takes place outside of
the busiest summer season when the children are off school. Keep
an eye on www.wakestock.co.uk
for the latest news on next years event.
Storm Surge
Causes Damage on Abersoch Main Beach: (19/08/2008) A large spring tide combined with strong winds and a storm
surge affected between 30 and 50 dinghies on Abersoch Main Beach
overnight with up to a dozen sustaning some serious damage. Coastguards
were called to the beach last night due to safety fears of persons
entering the water to try and rescue the craft. The worst of the
damage was caused near to the Golf Road slipway and the scene
this morning, was a rather sad one. The height of the tide appears
to have caught many by suprise and it appears that the evening
high tide coincided with the arrival of a large Atlantic swell,
making the tide surge much higher than normal. Some photos of
the beach can be viewed at John Wormalds website at: http://john53.zenfolio.com/p598925468/
Noson Lawen
At Oriel Plas: (17/08/2008) There will be a Welsh Folk Evening (Noson Lawen) at Oriel

the gallery and have a burger or hot dog, which is included in
the ticket price. The bbq will also be available during the half-time
break. The concert will begin at 7.15 pm, and this week will feature
the popular Welsh group Brigyn , a group of harpists
Derw Bach and storytelling by Dafydd Davies
Hughes. For more info and contact info: www.oriel.org.uk
Abersoch Lifeboat

Abersoch Regatta
Raft Race: (15/08/2008) This years raft race saw a good
crowd watch fleets of highly tuned, junior and senior rafts racing
on Abersoch Main Beach. The juniors raced from the SCYC end to
the Golf Slipway and was won by the "Rookies", closely
followed by "Pipedream" and "Razor". The seniors
then raced round to the harbour and comfortable winners (again!)
were Marcus and Jack on "Overboard". There was a very
close finish for second place with "Board Shorts" pipping
soloist Andy Hughes with "Team Jones" close behind in
fourth. There was certainly a higher standard of raft this year
and the Abersoch Regatta Committee would like to thank all those
who took part in the race and the sponsors, the Vaynol Arms. John
Wormald of Totally Abersoch was there to film the event and you

UFO's Filmed
Over Abersoch - Explanation?: (08/08/2008) Regarding the story below- we
have been emailed by an aviation expert who says: "Its
very likely to be a flare from an Iridium satellite as it passes
over us (usually visible for about 10 minutes). The satellite
has huge reflectors and they reflect the sunlight, even when its
dark on the ground.
It doesn't appear to be moving that quick and almost looks stationary
at
times. As it moves across the sky the sunlight at some point becomes
focused
on the viewer on the ground and this gives the almost incandescent
appearance for a second or two and then it seems to disappear
but all that's
happened is the light is no longer being reflected."
Mindless Vandalism
Putting Lives At Risk: (07/08/2008) A recent spate of thefts and
vandalism at our local beaches is potentially putting lives at
risk. 2 safety signs near to the entrance of Porth Neigwl have
recently been stolen and the life belt post knocked down. Another
life belt was stolen from Abersoch Main Beach this week. A local
resident summed up the actions by saying "It takes a really
special kind of idiot to steal or vandalise equipment that is
designed to save lives."

lifestyle retailer is kicking off another summer beach football
event to raise money for local charities. The tournament

from the day will go to Wales Ambulance Service, a charity providing
a vital service through emergency air cover for those who face
life-threatening illness or injuries.

wait for kick-off, "It's a great day out for some great causes.
It's the perfect way to get active, meet fellow fans of the beautiful
game and it's all on the beach! Plus our White Stuff Sunset Sessions
are fast becoming legendary. All people need to do is pop into
their local store and sign up. And we haven't forgotten about

done while the boys play out on the pitch."

low tide mark between The Galley and Llanbedrog Headland. If anyone
finds it - please can you email

is of great sentimental value and there is a generous reward for
finding it.

GP14 World Championship - Latest News:(12/07/08) Entries for the GP14 World Championship
2008 to be held in Abersoch,
North Wales have now hit 110. Amongst the latest to enter are
former
Endeavour Trophy Champion of Champions, and one of the most successful
GP14 pairings of all time, Richard Estaugh and Simon Potts, alongside
the well known and also very successful dinghy sailor (himself
a former
Champion of Champions) Jim Hunt, crewed by Andy Service.
Richards record in the GP14 is impressive.
He has won no less than 6
World, 12 National and 11 Inland Championships! Back together
with Simon
for the first time since their 2007 Nationals win, this team will
no
doubt be pushing for another podium finish. However, it will not
be an
easy challenge.
This event will also see current GP14 World
Champions Ian Dobson and
Andy Tunnicliffe seek to defend their title, 2003 World Champions
Neil
Marsden and Derek Hill team up again to repeat the success they
enjoyed
in Abersoch that year and current Fireball World Champion Matt
Mee
looking to add another World Championship to his growing list
of
honours, which already include a GP14 National Championship. There
are
many others too, including Carl Jeffs and Jim Toothill who will
again be
hoping to capture the major title that still alludes them.
Elsewhere, there will be the inevitable fight
for silver and bronze
fleet prizes and special trophies, which feature as much in the
post-race bar talk as any other. And as if this high level of
competition throughout the fleet and the prospect of racing against
109
other boats was not enough to entice people, Championship Chairman
Ian
Sinclair and his team, together with South Caernarvonshire Yacht
Club
are working tirelessly to ensure a great time off the water as
well,
with live bands, hog roasts and much more!
You can find out more on the GP14 Worlds
web page - www.gp14.org.

Wakestock 2008:(07/07/08)
The Relentless Wakestock 2008 ended last night after 3 days of
wakeboarding and music. The forecasted deluge of rain over the
weekend never really materialised and this extremely well organised
event appears to have been a great success. One of the highlights
of the weekend was local girl, and international star, Duffy's
"homecoming" performance on Sunday evening. For more

brings the action to Abersoch Main Beach on Friday evening from
6pm to 7.30 when the riders battle it out to see who can pull
of the biggest and best trick. For the latest info on this and
the music festival, visit: www.wakestock.co.uk
